Halloween Can Be a Difficult Time for Anxious Children - Amazon Bestseller and Soon-To-Be Barnes and Noble Book 'Scaredies Away' Offers a Simple Solution
BRICK, N.J., Oct. 29, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Halloween is a difficult time for children who suffer from anxiety and nightmares.
School psychologist Stacy Fiorile explains that "preschool kids in particular tend to have a hard time separating fantasy from reality at Halloween. What that means is that when a person wears a costume, the child believes that the person has actually transformed into that scary person. This can then lead to heighted anxiety and nightmares for several weeks. In order to help children minimize their anxiety, Fiorile and self-help author Barry McDonagh, have launched a new book for children called 'Scaredies Away.'
Fiorile explains that "not all parents want to take their child to a psychologist if they develop an anxiety issue but these parents still want to address the problem in a meaningful way."
Since the launch of 'Scaredies Away', over a thousand parents have purchased the book pushing it into Amazon's bestseller list in its category. Because of demand, Barnes and Noble have confirmed they will now stock the book in their stores - a rare achievement for any self-published work.
While numerous books already exist for children with anxiety, 'Scaredies Away' differs in that it delivers one simple tool (the Magic Finger Countdown) to help children reduce their anxiety. The tool is built upon research connected to mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR), which is a new and validated approach for treating anxiety.
Fiorile explains that "we are part of a new and empowering movement that is teaching children to master their feelings by becoming mindful of them."
Fiorile continues, "This book is for both parents and children alike as it teaches that no feelings or emotions should be suppressed but rather brought to light and safely released."
"Our goal is to touch as many lives as possible with this technique and really empower children who suffer from anxiety." Fiorile hopes that "If just one child can make it to school without feeling so anxious or can enjoy the magical excitement of Halloween without the subsequent nightmares, we will have done our job."
