Harrisonburg's Linford Berry completes Benefit Auction class, returns home with award from bid-calling competition
HARRISONBURG, Va., Dec. 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Harrisonburg-area auctioneer Linford Berry has been an auctioneer less than a year, but already, he's called more than 60 auctions, competed with some of the nation's best bid callers and completed the classroom requirements for the Benefit Auction Specialist (BAS) designation through the National Auctioneers Association.
Berry traveled to Las Vegas for the BAS class, offered as part of the the NAA's Designation Academy. The BAS training equips auctioneers with advanced techniques to help non-profit organizations maximize the results of their fundraising events.
"Benefit Auctions have become very specialized field, as non-profits have become more sophisticated in their understanding of the value a professional auctioneer can provide in every aspect of their event. This has resulted in the BAS becoming one of the industry's most coveted credentials," said Berry. "In the past, many non-profits relied on volunteer auctioneers. However, non-profits all over the country have found that they can get better results with a specialist."
Berry expects to receive the BAS designation in the coming months, after completing post-class requirements.
While in Las Vegas, he also competed in the US Bid Calling Championship, bringing home the Rookie Championship award given to the highest-scoring competitor with less than two years of experience.
Berry noted that the competition attracted experienced auctioneers from all over the country. "I really jumped into the deep end of the pool with that, but it was a great learning experience, and I learned a great deal that will benefit my clients," he said.
Berry attended the World Wide College of Auctioneering in February and frequently calls produce auctions, as well as serving as a contract auctioneer for various auction companies. "It's an exciting new direction for me," he said. Berry noted that he will continue as owner of Mountain Valley Motors, which includes automotive sales and service, with plans to begin regular public auto auctions in the spring of 2017.
