NORTH ANDOVER, Mass., Nov. 13, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- School Year Abroad (SYA) is pleased to announce that Thomas E. Hassan, former Principal of Phillips Exeter Academy (Exeter), will become the next President of SYA beginning in June, 2016.
In announcing Mr. Hassan's appointment, Kenneth J. Krushel, Chair of SYA's Board of Trustees, said, "The breadth and depth of Tom's experience is inspiring. SYA's board unanimously elected an educator whose work is defined by formidable leadership skill, strength of purpose, and passion for global education that will resonate throughout the SYA community. Tom brings rare qualities uniquely suited to build upon SYA's fifty year legacy as the country's premier high school study abroad program."
As President of SYA, Hassan will be overseeing its extensive educational activities. The fully-accredited school includes four campuses (Beijing, China; Rennes, France; Viterbo, Italy and Zaragoza, Spain).
Hassan brings more than 35 years of educational experience to his new job, including three years as an SYA board member. At Exeter, he served in many capacities, including as math instructor, director of college counseling, director of admissions, assistant principal, acting principal and principal. Prior to Exeter, Hassan worked at Brown and Harvard Universities as well as the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. Under Hassan's direction, Exeter became a leader in efforts to further global outreach programs for students and faculty, and his attention to individuals on the Exeter campus has resulted in a strong internal community.
"I am thrilled to be able to join an organization I know so well that is focused on providing academic and personal opportunities and challenges," said Hassan. "The ability to understand and learn from, and in, other cultures is a critical component to a well-rounded education today and tomorrow, and I am inspired by SYA's mission."
A graduate of Brown University, Hassan earned his master's and doctorate degrees at Harvard University. Hassan, who is married to New Hampshire Governor Maggie Hassan, begins at SYA on June 1, 2016.
In commenting upon Tom Hassan's appointment, Mr. Krushel said: "The trustees are deeply impressed not only with Tom's record of accomplishments, which is outstanding, but also by the personal qualities he introduces. He carries an obvious and compelling esteem for great teaching and innovation. Combined with his dynamism and perspective on global education, he will expand the good work of our current school president, Jack Creeden, defining SYA's global education leadership role in the 21st century".
