Hawaiian Airlines Awarded First Ever Aviation Carbon Credits Using Pratt & Whitney's EcoPower® Engine Wash
HONOLULU, Feb. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Hawaiian Airlines, a subsidiary of Hawaiian Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: HA), was today awarded the first ever aviation-based carbon credit. The credits are Verified Carbon Units, issued under the requirements of the Verified Carbon Standard using a new methodology developed by Pratt & Whitney. The methodology provides a validated process for calculating the CO2 savings achieved from using EcoPower engine wash. Pratt & Whitney is a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) company.
"We are proud to be the first airline to receive certified carbon credits for reducing emissions," said Mark Dunkerley, president and CEO of Hawaiian. "Importantly, engine washing with EcoPower is helping us mitigate rising fuel costs and significantly reduce Hawaiian's carbon footprint at the same time."
Since 2005, Hawaiian has saved more than 2.5 million gallons of fuel and 26,000 gallons of water, eliminated potential soil and groundwater contamination, and reduced its CO2 emissions by 22,000 metric tons as a result of continued use of the environmentally-friendly EcoPower engine wash.
"It is appropriate that our first EcoPower customer, Hawaiian Airlines, is also the first customer to be awarded Verified Carbon Units as a result," said Rick Deurloo, vice president, Pratt & Whitney Sales, Americas.
Now in its 83rd year of continuous service in Hawaii, Hawaiian Airlines is a subsidiary of Hawaiian Holdings, Inc. and the largest provider of passenger air service to Hawaii from the state's primary visitor markets. Learn more at http://www.hawaiianair.com/.

Pratt & Whitney is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines, space propulsion systems and industrial gas turbines. United Technologies, based in Hartford, Conn., is a diversified company providing high technology products and services to the global aerospace and commercial building industries.
