WASHINGTON, Nov. 17, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Ertharin Cousin, executive director of the United Nations World Food Programme, will speak at the 12th Annual Gala to End Hunger in New York City tonight. This anti-hunger event is a gathering of Bread for the World, Bread for the World Institute, and Alliance to End Hunger members.

"I am privileged to have the honor of interviewing Ertharin Cousin, a friend and stalwart champion in the fight to end hunger and poverty," said Rev. David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World. "Her work at the United Nations World Food Programme is crucial if we are to eradicate hunger and poverty by 2030."

The World Food Programme is the world's largest humanitarian organization with approximately 13,500 staff serving more than 90 million beneficiaries in 80 countries across the world. An American, Cousin guides the World Food Programme from Rome in meeting urgent food needs while championing longer-term solutions to food insecurity and hunger.

"Ms. Cousin and the United Nations World Food Programme's efforts to meet the food needs of millions of refugees displaced by wars, famine, and other hardships is especially critical at this point in time," added Beckmann. "Yet, despite these challenges, I am confident we can see the virtual end to hunger and poverty within a generation."

The Gala to End Hunger serves to garner support for anti-hunger efforts and recognizes individuals and organizations for their contributions. This year the gala will also celebrate the Alliance to End Hunger's 10th anniversary.

The event is co-chaired by Lauren and John Driscoll, Montie and Terence Meehan, and Megan Heanue and Ravi Sachdev.
