What does it mean for expectant mothers and hospitals when there are large-scale closures of maternity units? A new study provides an inside view from hospital staff in Philadelphia, where 13 of 19 obstetric units closed in a 15-year period. Scott A. Lorch, M.D., M.S.C.E., a neonatologist at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, led the study that appeared today in the journal Health Affairs. Lorch and his colleagues concluded that better planning is needed to help improve health outcomes and reduce stress on health systems and staff at remaining hospital OB units.
