While recently swimming in the Pacific Ocean, off the Marshall Islands, Jared Hamilton cut his ankle on a piece of coral. This simple injury soon progressed into a potentially life and limb threatening infection known as necrotizing fasciitis or "flesh eating disease." While the bacteria that caused the infection had been killed by antibiotics, the tissue destroying toxic proteins produced by the bacteria were unaffected and continued to migrate up his leg, destroying an ever increasing amount of tissue along the way. It soon became apparent Jared needed to be transferred to Honolulu for advanced medical treatment. (PRNewsFoto/NNFF)
