Health Outcomes Sciences' ePRISM® reveals Impressive Results for Improving PCI Informed Consent
ePRISM's breakthrough point-of-care clinical risk modeling improves patients' percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) experience and better engages them in shared decision-making
KANSAS CITY, Mo., Nov. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Health Outcomes Sciences, LLC (HOS), (http://www.h-outcomes.com) the company behind the breakthrough predictive modeling solution called ePRISM, released its findings yesterday at a Late Breaking Clinical Trial session at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions Conference in Orlando, Florida. ePRISM is able to personalize medicine by delivering validated prediction models using each patient's individual data.
"The results are significant and reinforce our premise that evidence-based knowledge, delivered at the point-of-care through informed consent documents, can dramatically increase the quality of PCI," said Matt Wilson, HOS' President. "Early-on our clients realized rapid improvement in PCI patients' outcomes and we fully anticipate the benefits of our ePRISM solution will expand into other disease groups in the near future."
The study involved nine nationally renowned medical centers across the United States. A pre/post survey of patients undergoing PCI was developed to compare patients' perceptions of the new consent forms, understanding the risks/benefits of treatment and engagement in medical decision-making. Variations in ePRISM's effectiveness across sites were assessed and adjusted for in hierarchical models. Across the entire population, marked improvements in reviewing and understanding the consent forms were observed in all domains.
"Paper-based patient consent forms have been in use for decades, but they are often vague and don't effectively support shared medical decision-making," states study director John Spertus, MD, Cardiologist and Professor of Medicine University of Missouri-Kansas City. "The novel consent tool within HOS' ePRISM solution provides understandable, educational information for patients, combined with personalized outcomes predicted from validated NCDR models."
Dr. Spertus, who also serves as Clinical Director of Outcomes Research, Mid America Heart Institute, Lauer/Missouri Endowed Chair and Professor, University of Missouri - Kansas City concludes, "This study truly represents that personalized medicine can be delivered to each and every patient today."
