Area residents were recently reminded of the importance of having access to AEDs when one was used in the rescue of a 13-year old from nearby Martin, TN while attending a football scrimmage at Calloway County High School. Marc Lawrence, HeartSine's Senior Vice President, who presented the AEDs, applauded the Calloway County School District for its preventative awareness and initiative. In fact, he noted that Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) claims more than 425,000 lives annually and is the leading cause of death in young athletes and the leading overall cause of death in the United States.
Josh McKeel, the athletic director for Calloway County Schools, said, "We are very excited to receive this donation of an AED to the Calloway County School District. We have proven the life-saving ability of this device twice in the past two years. While we hope this new machine will never be used, it should give some sense of comfort to everyone within our buildings that it is ready in case of an emergency. Thank you to HeartSine Technologies for their generosity."
Murray Independent School District Superintendent Bob Rogers echoed these comments, saying, "Our school system is very thankful to HeartSine for this donation. This will enable our trainer and staff to be better prepared if they're faced with an emergency situation, as we try to keep our students as safe as possible."
HeartSine, a world leader in personal and public access defibrillators, was initially contacted by Lance Harper, a Certified Athletic Trainer in Murray, KY. "We are proud to have played a role in the previous lifesaving efforts," HeartSine's Lawrence said. "And knowing that having AEDs close to where an SCA event might occur ensures that victims have a much greater chance of survival. We hope these donations will bring peace of mind to the community."
