DETROIT and SAN ANTONIO, Feb. 11, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Henry Ford Learning Institute (HFLI), an early and experienced implementer of design thinking in education, released details of its summer professional development series in Detroit, Michigan and San Antonio, Texas.
HFLI describes design thinking as a collection of mindsets and methods that allow people to creatively explore problems, then reframe and act on them. It involves action, or "design doing," as well as thinking. These approaches go back decades and draw from the work of systems thinkers, psychologists, anthropologists, design researchers, architects, and scientists, among others.
"We find design thinking to be a messy, rich, powerful process that compels deeper student learning and develops stronger schools," said Deborah Parizek, Executive Director of Henry Ford Learning Institute. "Many professional development programs for human-centered design are online, without sustained human interactions. Online learning can be valuable; however, if it's the only design thinking PD an educator experiences, the result will be a surface understanding and underdeveloped capacity to implement design thinking for impact."
Registration is underway for the following:
Design Thinking for Deeper Student Learning
Detroit: July 22-24
San Antonio: August 5-7
A 3-day experience that provides K-20 educators with an in-depth introduction to design thinking and how it can be used to engage students in meaningful thinking, learning and doing. Using an immersive learning approach, participants will develop key skills and gain access to a comprehensive set of instructional tools and materials.
Design Thinking for Stronger Schools
Detroit: July 25-26
San Antonio: August 8-9
A 2-day experience for school leaders and transformational educators who want to use design thinking to address a specific challenge and enact change in their schools, build complementary skills (systems thinking, rapid prototyping, change management), and work collaboratively.
For 10 years, HFLI has brought educators together to learn about design thinking with and from each other, trying it out together in a supportive space. Participants take away a range of design thinking tools and curricula to implement in their own setting. 97% of past participants would recommend the experience to a colleague.
Register now and take advantage of Early Bird pricing. To learn about group discounts or substantial scholarships for educators from Title I schools, contact HFLI at designthinking [at] hfli.org.
