The National Runaway Safeline and its Partners Bring Awareness to the Youth Runaway Issue
CHICAGO, Nov. 1, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Every day – 24/7 – the National Runaway Safeline (NRS) is "Here to listen. Here to help." runaway, homeless and at-risk youth and their families. National Runaway Prevention Month (NRPM) in November is a special time of year when partners nationwide join in to raise awareness about the youth runaway crisis in America and educate people about prevention and solutions.
"When a youth runs away, the impact is felt throughout the entire community," said Maureen Blaha, NRS executive director. "That's why it's important for everybody to take a moment this November to discuss the runaway issue and prevention possibilities."
To bring greater understanding of this problem, individuals and organizations throughout the country are planning activities during November, including:
Green Light Project: Green is the symbol of NRPM. Americans can show support of runaway, homeless and at-risk youth by shining a green light on their front porches, wearing a green lapel pin, or participating in Green Sock Day on Nov. 8. This year, Greyhound Lines, Inc. is getting involved by making Nov. 8 "Greenhound Day" when employees nationwide will wear green socks and share photos of themselves on the company's social media channels to help drive awareness.
Social Media Day of Action: On Nov. 4, NRS will share photos of NRPM activities and statistics on the runaway issue via social media. Organizations nationwide can participate any day in November by wearing green socks, uploading photos displaying their support of NRPM to Facebook, and tweeting those photos with the hashtag #NRPM2013.
Spirit of Youth Benefit: This Chicago event on Nov. 1 is NRS' annual fundraiser to recognize individuals and organizations that help to keep America's runaway, homeless and at-risk youth safe and off the street. Award-winning author and NRS volunteer Naomi Mun will receive the 2013 "Spirit of Youth" award.
