Highmark-sponsored bus stop warming stations provide a break from Arctic chill
PITTSBURGH, Jan. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- While the temperatures have plummeted to some of the coldest Western Pennsylvania has seen in decades, it hasn't changed the fact that the people in the community still need to get around. For many, that means riding the bus. But for those braving the cold at some bus stops in Pittsburgh, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is offering an unexpected burst of warm air this winter.
Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield has installed warming stations at four Pittsburgh bus shelters. The warming stations feature overhead heat lamps that provide some welcome relief from the frigid air gripping the region. They are the first of their kind in our region.
"These warming stations may be novel and something for people to talk about, but more importantly they show our commitment to the health and well-being of people in Pittsburgh," said Steven Nelson, a Highmark executive. "It may be a small gesture, but it shows that we care. And the response from the community has been very positive."
There are four bus shelters-turned-warming stations. Three are located in downtown Pittsburgh: at Boulevard of the Allies and Stanwix Street, Liberty Avenue and Ninth Street, and Fifth Avenue and Ross Street. The fourth is at Reedsdale Street and Boyce Street on the city's North Side.
The bus stops are emblazoned with signage for Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield's Community Blue health plan. This plan leverages a highly efficient network of community hospitals and doctors to provide quality care at a lower price. Community Blue offers access to 92 percent of doctors and 97 percent of hospitals across the country, including 7,600 physicians and 53 hospitals in Western Pennsylvania.
