BOULDER, Colo., June 20, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Colorado's own Hippo Health today announced the launch of its on-demand medical care service, available across the Centennial State.
Drawing its name from the Hippocratic Oath, Hippo Health is a secure, affordable and easy-to-use telemedicine service that connects Coloradans with local, board-certified emergency physicians. Hippo Health subscribers have unlimited access to physicians from 8am until midnight. The service costs $19 per month for individuals and $37 per month for families of up to seven. Additional family members can be added for $5 per month. Health insurance is not required to use Hippo Health and users can pay with a flexible spending account (FSA) or health savings account (HSA).
The company was co-founded by Drs. Kevin McGarvey, Dave Wiebe and Ken Rooks, who are Hippo Health owner-practitioners.
"Hippo Health is 100 percent focused on improving the patient / provider experience and connecting people with their trusted local doctor; nothing is outsourced," said Hippo Health CEO, Kevin McGarvey MD, MBA, FACEP. "For the past two years we've been running a pilot program serving more than 200,000 people in Colorado. And what we found time and again is that what people really want is to connect with a local, established expert physician when they need to. They want to know and trust who's at the other end of the line. We built Hippo Health specifically to meet that need here in Colorado."
Through the Hippo Health iOS or desktop apps, users can communicate with a local physician with live in-app chat, photos, video, or a phone call to receive diagnoses, medical advice and prescriptions in minutes.
The average cost of an emergency room visit is more than $1,000, and, according to a recent report, approximately 1.8 million Coloradans visit emergency rooms every year.
"Many of us at Hippo Health have young and growing families ourselves, and we understand that it can be a real challenge to know what to do and when to do it. Unfortunately, we also know that people are having to make suboptimal health decisions, like not visiting a doctor or emergency room when they probably should, strictly because of the cost," added McGarvey. "Hippo Health offers another option. We're there when you need us, right on your phone."
