Hope for Haiti and Partners Send First Responders to Assess Damage from Hurricane Matthew in Les Cayes, Haiti
STAMFORD, Conn., Oct. 7, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- More than 800 pounds of medication, medical supplies and disaster response materials were airlifted from Bridgeport, Connecticut to Haiti yesterday. This extraordinary effort was made possible through a collaboration of Americares, Building and Land Technology, GE, Hope for Haiti and Team Rubicon. Transport was sponsored by Carl R. Kuehner, III, of Building and Land Technology.

Also aboard the plane was an experienced first responder team led by former Hope for Haiti country director and current volunteer Mike Stewart, along with experts from Americares and Team Rubicon. Working with the Hope for Haiti team in Les Cayes, the response team is now providing rapid needs assessment, distributing essential medications and medical supplies to the hardest hit areas of Southwestern Haiti, and assisting in creation of short, medium and long term response and rehabilitation plans.
Early visual assessment of Les Cayes and the surrounding areas revealed dire need due to extensive flooding, significant damage to homes, trees and structures, and massive amounts of debris. "In response to this type of emergency the critical period for preventing loss of life is the first 24 – 48 hours," said Mark Hindley, Hope for Haiti Chief Operating Officer. "Within that key time period we were able to quickly mobilize support to make a difference for the people of Haiti in concert with our partners."
