Huawei Joins Board of Directors of Open Platform for NFV Project
New open source reference platform intended to accelerate the introduction of new products and services
PLANO, Texas, Oct. 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announced that Dr. Anthony C.K. Soong, Chief Scientist, Wireless Research and Standards at Huawei Technologies USA, has been appointed as Platinum Board Director of the Open Platform for NFV (OPNFV) project. Established by the Linux Foundation and announced on September 30, the carrier-grade, integrated open source platform is intended to accelerate the introduction of new products and services.
"I am honored to be appointed to the OPNFV Board of Directors," said Dr. Anthony C.K. Soong. "OPNFV will be instrumental in providing a reference platform for driving adoption of well-documented, integrated and tested open source components for NFV deployments in growing industry segments such as M2M communications and future technologies such as 5G."
With his proven expertise in communications engineering, Dr. Soong, an IEEE Fellow, has contributed significantly to the development of standards in the 3GPP, 3GPP2 and IEEE 802 community. Additionally, he has performed extensive research in the 4G and 5G wireless networking and communications areas, has published numerous scientific papers and has over 80 patents granted or pending.
In addition to Dr. Soong's appointment, George Reed, Senior Vice President of Solutions and Marketing for Huawei Technologies USA, will be joining the marketing committee of the OPNFV project where he will help promote the OPNFV project at industry events and collaborate with other OPNFV member companies.
Huawei is one of the leading companies participating in the software-defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) field that have joined the OPNFV project. The project will initially look to build NFV infrastructure and virtualized infrastructure management solutions, leveraging existing open-source components. Longer-term, the OPNFV project aims to establish an ecosystem for NFV solutions based on open standards and software, and promote itself as the preferred open reference platform in the industry.
"The industry's shift to SDN and NFV is changing the way applications are delivered and consumed," said Margaret Chiosi, President, OPNFV. "As operators strive to meet the demands of consumers and enterprises for services in today's Internet of Things era, collaboration among operators and companies such as Huawei will help to address these challenges head-on."
