Humane Society Of Vero Beach Reaches Out To Fellsmere Community With "Best Friend Fix" Pet Spay And Neuter Services
VERO BEACH, Fla., May 9, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The Humane Society of Vero Beach (HSVB) is working to sterilize cats and dogs in the small community of Fellsmere, FL. Almost 30% of the residents live in poverty and can't afford pet wellness. HSVB staff provide wellness services and encourage spaying and neutering of pets. With a grant from Florida Animal Friend, they are able to provide free and low-cost sterilization services through "Best Friend Fix."
Bilingual staff members and shelter volunteers travel to the only community grocer, the Garcia Plaza Bakery, where the community congregates to spread the word about the importance of pet care and sterilization. They also provide pick up and delivery services for pets belonging to owners without access to transportation.
HSVB's air conditioned animal transport vehicle picks up and returns pets to their owners after they have been sterilized. The grant for these spay and neuter services allows HSVB to offer other items such as ID tags, vaccinations, flea and heartworm medications to this extremely underserved population.
Florida Animal Friend helps to fund organizations that offer free and low-cost spay and neuter services across the state. The $15,000 grant money awarded to HSVB was part of a $580,000 total distributed to various grant winners by Florida Animal Friend throughout the state of Florida in 2015.
"This is another great example of what funds from the sale of Florida Animal Friend license plates can do," said Lois Kostroski, executive director of Florida Animal Friend. "The community outreach that the Humane Society of Vero Beach has been able to accomplish in conjunction with the grant from Florida Animal Friend means that 500 pets will be sterilized in this community this year alone."
