COSTA MESA, Calif., Dec. 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Hyundai Motor America and the Fountain Valley School District (FVSD) recently announced the opening of the Hyundai ST Math Lab at Robert Gisler Elementary School in Fountain Valley. More than 700 students, teachers, community leaders and Hyundai executives, including FVSD Superintendent Dr. Marc Ecker, Hyundai CEO and President John Krafcik, and Fountain Valley City Council Mayor Mark McCurdy were on hand at Gisler Elementary for a celebratory assembly and ribbon-cutting ceremony on December 13, 2012.
"Giving back to the communities in which we work and do business is at the forefront of our operations at Hyundai," said John Krafcik, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor America. "We are committed to being a good corporate citizen by helping to provide a brighter academic future for today's youth. Our corporate social responsibility strategy is to find innovative ways to solve important problems in society."
Hyundai's contribution to the FVSD will provide more than 500 students at Gisler Elementary with MIND Research Institute's cutting-edge ST (Spatial Temporal) Math education program designed to increase student interest and success in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM-based curriculum). At the Hyundai ST Math Lab, students will interact with JiJi, an instructional penguin that walks students through visual puzzles that are the hallmark of ST Math.
Gisler Elementary School is the second Fountain Valley school to receive the ST Math program as a corporate gift from Hyundai and the fourth in Southern California. Providing resources to improve the quality of education public schools offer is an important component of Hyundai's ongoing CSR strategy.
"We are thrilled and very appreciative of the continued support the Fountain Valley School District receives from Hyundai Motor America," said Marc Ecker, Superintendent of the Fountain Valley School District. "Their contributions to our ST Math program have provided additional resources for our students, enabling them to meet the rigorous California State Standards in mathematics."
MIND's ST Math program is used by more than 200,000 students in California. Students using the program have on average doubled their growth in math proficiency on the California Standards Test.
