Ibotta Announces Naughty or Nice List, Reveals Which States Have Most, Least Holiday Spirit

DENVER, Dec. 5, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Ibotta, the starting point for rewarded shopping on mobile, today released its inaugural Naughty or Nice List, revealing which states have the most holiday spirit heading into the holiday season. Ibotta developed the list, which ranks how all 50 states stack up when it comes to their holiday purchasing behavior, after examining three years' worth of consumer purchases of milk, cookies, carrots, candy canes and eggnog the week before Christmas. It found that Utah is the "Nicest" state, while Maine has room for improvement, as it claims the number one spot on Santa's Naughty List.

The findings, which included an analysis of 5.1 million item-level receipts for purchases made in the week before Christmas in 2015, 2016 and 2017, showed Utah residents earned their spot atop Santa's Nice List by purchasing more cookies, milk and carrots combined than any other state, while Oregon, with the most carrots purchased, established itself as the top destination for reindeer. Maine topped the Naughty List with the least number of cookies, milk and carrots purchased, followed by Wisconsin, Mississippi and North Dakota, respectively.

When it comes to leaving cookies out for Santa, Rhode Island goes the homemade route, followed by Connecticut and Massachusetts for purchasing the most cookie baking supplies (flour, sugar, eggs and chocolate chips) the week before Christmas. Santa will enjoy store-bought cookies while visiting Louisiana houses, with residents buying more packaged cookies than any other state. The most popular store-bought cookies being left out on Christmas Eve are Oreo, Chips Ahoy! and Keebler.

Ohio ranked as the most extravagant state during the holidays, spending the most money at the grocery store in the week before Christmas, while Oregon and Washington spend the least.

• Flour, sugar - cheapest on December 19
• Cookies - cheapest on December 22
• Carrots - cheapest on December 23
