"IF you can write" Competition Shines the Spotlight on Integrity
Ideals expressed in Rudyard Kipling's classic poem "If" can and must inspire ours and future generations
ATLANTA, Feb. 14, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- All Things If, an online literary magazine devoted to the ideals expressed in Kipling's "If", announces their inaugural writing contest, "IF you can write…". Writers are asked to affirm one of the life lessons encouraged in Kipling's "If" by selecting a principle expressed in the poem and demonstrating its meaning in fiction and non-fiction categories. First prize in each category is $500.
Many of us memorized the poem in school. Think back… "If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you…". "If you can make one heap of all your winnings and risk it on one turn of pitch and toss, and lose, and start again at your beginnings and never breathe a word about your loss..." Finally, "Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, and—what's more—you'll be a man, my son."
The contest is part of a fresh approach to spreading these ideals. Founder and managing editor Misha Shengaout says, "Most people don't like where the world is headed. If we don't make a conscious, pervasive effort to evolve our perspective on living day to day, we'll miss out on so much life has to offer, not to mention what we have to offer others. We owe it to ourselves to search for more."
First-, second- and third-place winners will receive cash prizes, and their work will be published in the literary magazine. The deadline for entries is April 9, 2012, after which subscribers will vote for their favorite entry. The top 15 vote-getters in each category will become finalists, and winners will be chosen by the magazine's editorial board. Winners will be announced May 1, 2012.
