Ilios Introduces Natural Gas Engine Driven High Efficiency Water Heater Lowers Costs, Fuel Consumption and Carbon Emissions
WALTHAM, Mass., Nov. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Ilios Dynamics, a subsidiary of Tecogen Inc., today announced commercial availability of the Ilios High Efficiency Water Heater. Powered by a highly efficient natural gas engine, this water heating module extracts energy from the atmosphere and pumps this heat to useful temperatures. Free waste heat from the engine is captured and repurposed, adding to the unit's capacity and efficiency. Ideal for commercial and industrial sites with substantial hot water requirements, the Ilios High Efficiency Water Heater offers up to twice the efficiency and half the fuel consumption of a conventional gas-fired boiler.
The highly efficient heat pump with reclaimed engine waste heat results in a coefficient of performance (COP) of 1.2 to 1.8. It can produce 400,000 to 600,000 BTU/hr of hot water, which is ideal for commercial domestic hot water, process hot water or space heating in commercial buildings and manufacturing facilities. The Ilios High Efficiency Water Heater is an alternative to conventional systems at facilities with a gas demand of 2,000 therms per month or more; Ilios units are modular and scalable to serve larger thermal loads.
Applications for this system include mid-sized hotels, swimming pools, nursing homes, hospitals, health clubs, student dormitories, universities, residential buildings, recreation centers, commercial buildings, and waterparks. Electric power requirements are minimal -- comparable to a household appliance (120 VAC, 15 amp service). Additionally, with Tecogen's patent pending Ultra-Low Emissions exhaust treatment technology, criteria pollutants (contributors to smog) are reduced to near zero; an outstanding achievement for natural gas engine-driven technologies.
Ilios products are being designed to support a more sustainable energy future. Given current economic and environmental realities, a shift to greater energy efficiency is critical.
"Fifteen percent of domestic oil and natural gas is dedicated to commercial and residential heating which is an often overlooked opportunity for energy savings," said Martin J. McDonough, chief operating officer, Ilios Dynamics. "The Ilios High Efficiency Water Heater uses advanced thermodynamic principles and new technology to significantly cut heating costs and carbon emissions. In a time of economic uncertainty, we are proud to be in a position not only to contribute to a cleaner environment but also to help reduce our clients' operating costs."
Pricing and availability
Federal Investment Tax Credits ("ITC") and Accelerated Depreciation are currently available for qualified Combined Heat and Power products including the Ilios High Efficiency Water Heater. These programs can substantially reduce the payback time for this equipment. Current calculations estimate payback to be in the 4 year range with some sites able to recoup costs in 3 years.
The Ilios High Efficiency Heat Pump is available through Tecogen Inc. and American DG Energy Inc. sales. For more information, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
Ilios will be exhibiting at AHR Expo in Chicago (Jan. 23-25, 2012). For a first-hand look at the actual unit, we invite you to visit us in Chicago.

Ilios Dynamics, a subsidiary of Tecogen Inc., was formed in April 2009 to develop and distribute a line of ultra high-efficiency heating products for commercial and industrial applications utilizing advanced thermodynamic principles. Products incorporate mechanical work to extract heat from the environment to supplement chemical energy available from natural gas. The result is a significant boost in efficiency and reduced carbon emissions relative to conventional heating systems. For more information please visit www.iliosdynamics.com.
