In Honor of World Water Day, SodaStream and Trees for the Future Announce "Replant our Planet," a Reforestation Program to Plant Hundreds of Thousands of Trees in Brazil
AIRPORT CITY, Israel and SILVER SPRING, Md., March 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- SodaStream International, Ltd. (NASDAQ: SODA), in collaboration with Trees for the Future (TFTF), today announced the launch of Replant our Planet, a program designed to help reverse environmental destruction and improve the atmosphere in Brazil by planting trees. The program is part of SodaStream's ongoing commitment to help offset carbon emissions and correct some of the damage caused by deforestation and other harmful actions. Beginning this month, SodaStream will plant 10 trees in Brazil for every purchase of a SodaStream home beverage carbonation system from the Company's Rethink your Soda limited-edition line. The program will run through the end of 2012.
"SodaStream is honored to participate in such an important project," said Daniel Birnbaum, CEO of SodaStream. "Tree-planting improves local livelihoods through sustainable productivity related to healthy forests. These programs help increase food yield, protect soil erosion from wind and water to enable nearby agriculture, and create jobs for Brazil's timber industry. SodaStream's eco-friendly products will be available in Brazil in a few weeks, so this is a great way to begin our connection to the region."
David Tye, Executive Director at TFTF added, "Communities around the globe rely on trees to meet their basic needs, but they end up destroying their environment by simply trying to survive. Thanks to the support of forward-thinking businesses like SodaStream, Trees for the Future works with communities to plant fast-growing multipurpose trees, so that they can improve their livelihoods while also protecting the environment. It is a true win-win situation."
Why planting trees?
Planting trees is one of the most cost-effective ways to offset carbon emissions, as well as beautify an area. It takes only 16 trees to supply the oxygen for one person's life, and it is estimated that every five or six new trees can offset one ton of carbon dioxide during their lifespan.
