Indie Singer-Songwriter Marye Lobb To Open for the David Bromberg Big Band at The Birchmere on March 2
Lobb's New Album "Not At War" Now Available
NEW YORK, March 1, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- (maryelobb.com) Indie singer-songwriter Marye Lobb will open for the David Bromberg Big Band on March 2 at The Birchmere in Alexandria, bringing her unique mix of folk and Bossa Nova to the Washington area for the first time. She will play acoustic guitar and sing selections from her brand-new album "Not At War," reflecting on love, hope, establishing one's sense of self, and being at peace with, and proud of, who you are.
"Don't let go of your feelings, they are all we have in the end. If you have thoughts that burn your eyes to see them, your heart will soon make amends," she sings in "Farewell", the last track on the new album.
If an Alpine lake high in the Chilean Andes had a voice, it would be like Marye Lobb's, crystalline and cool, intimate yet accessible, with a folk-infused style reminiscent of Judy Collins, seasoned with the flavors of Brazil. She developed her style during extensive travels, spending a year in Chile and then falling in love with the rhythms of Brazil.
Marye is no stranger to the D.C. area, since her father grew up in Northern Virginia and the family returned often. She is currently based in New York, where she has performed at Arlene's Grocery, Rockwood Music Hall, Bitter End, The Cutting Room, Sullivan Hall, Zinc Bar, The French Institute, Nuyorican Poets Cafe and La Zarza among other venues. She has also performed in Los Angeles, Boston, Rochester, N.Y., and Burlington, Vt., as well as cities in Chile, Brazil, and Greece.
She released her first album, "Finding Home," (available on iTunes) in 2008. She is a graduate of the Berklee School of Music in Boston.
"I'm thrilled to be opening for the David Bromberg Big Band," Marye said. "David Bromberg is a not only a gifted songwriter, but a musician whose talent spans an astonishing array of eclectic styles...Folk, blues, jazz, rock, country – he does it all."
Marye starts the album with a song she wrote during her travels to Brazil in 2008, entitled "Naranjas."
"Comimos Naranjas en la Playa, que nos dio el sol" ("We ate oranges on the beach that the sun gave to us") that has a sweet Bossa Nova feel that runs throughout the album. "All You Need" has a similar Latin vibe. The compelling lyrics of this song illustrate her strong songwriting skills when she takes on a delicate subject and masterfully communicates about a topic that is often left unspoken in our culture: "Don't you give it away, don't you take off that dress, until you know that you will not be made a mess."
"Amazing Latin rhythms ooze out of Marye's songs," her producer George Saenz says. "She's listened to so much of the music that they just naturally flow from her guitar, and Marye's phrasing when she sings is incredibly distinctive."
In "Naranjas," "Be Bright," "Let Go," and "All You Need," the listener hears exactly what George means. Not only are the songs infused with smooth Latin rhythms, but the instrumentation includes cajon, a box-like percussion instrument that originated in Peru.
"The cajon fits with what I'm communicating. Its multi-layered timbre follows my lyric-driven songs in a sweet, intimate way," says Marye.
"I began playing guitar when I lived in Chile," she says. "My instructor taught me South American folk songs on the guitar and charango. My world opened up completely when I heard Mercedes Sosa sing a Violetta Parra folk song. I was in awe every time I went to a pub or a restaurant or a house party; someone would play the guitar and everyone knew these folk songs and sang along."
"Not At War" will be available on iTunes, Amazon MP3, Google Music, eMusic, Rhapsody, Napster, CDBaby, Spotify, AllMusic and other sites.
