Innova Dynamics develops and begins sampling inks for transparent conductive films based on silver nanowires
This next generation, nano-materials platform is poised to expand touch sensor applications and consumer electronics markets
SAN FRANCISCO and TOKYO, June 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- San Francisco based venture company, Innova Dynamics, Inc. has announced today that it has begun sampling Innlay™ ink products for transparent conductive films (TCFs) for both touch sensor and non-touch markets. In terms of TCF products, Innova Dynamics has jointly developed these with Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP), one of Japan's optical film giants. Both companies will be ready for mass production this summer. The first applications are expected to be touch sensors for mobile devices. Innova Dynamics is developing a variety of specialty ink and film products for device applications beyond touch sensors.
Unique Innlay™ surface embedding technology by Innova Dynamics
By softening the surfaces of polymer substrates with Innova Dynamics' Innlay™ technology, any functional material - regardless of the size (molecules; particles nano- to micron-sized in scale, wire or particle) and type of material (silver, copper, TiO2, CNT, grapheme; organic or inorganic) - can be directly embedded into the substrate. Innova Dynamics' technology can control the depth of embedding as well, and thereby control the functional material efficiency in surfaces. Because of the extremely effective use of functional material being concentrated at surfaces, Innova Dynamics' Innlay™ films can achieve exceptional cost-performance in many applications. Furthermore, because the silver nanowires are embedded directly into the substrate, these structures are inherently reliable.
Partnership to launch new TCF products
After two years of collaboration based on their Joint Development Agreement, Innova Dynamics and DNP are now sampling transparent conductive films (TCFs) with sheet resistances of 50 ohms per square and 1% total Haze. The PET substrate thicknesses for these TCF products are both 47 um, today's state-of-the-art, and 23 um, ultra-thin for flexible device applications. These TCFs also exhibit extraordinary surface ruggedness, passing surface wipe tests with steel wool at 150 gram loadings. DNP is an ideal partner to develop and manufacture these new TCF products as it contributes the world's most advanced wet coating technologies and experience for optical film components, particularly for display and consumer electronics applications.
Touch Applications: Best cost-performance vs. other ITO replacement technologies
With sheet resistance as low as half that of ITO film (e.g., 50 vs. 100 OPS) and high optical performance, Innova Dynamics expects to capture not only smartphones and tablets, but larger PC applications as well spanning notebooks, 2-in-1's, and All-in-One's.
Because of dramatically lower costs than ITO films (a 30% to 50% cost advantage), Innova Dynamics expects to capture significant share for low- to mid-end applications often referred to as "White Box" devices.
Given the unrivaled flexibility of silver nanowires on plastic films, Innlay™ transparent conductive films are viewed by many as the most viable choice for next generation devices that are flexible, such as foldable smartphones, wearables and 3D displays.
