The event was started by Rick Narkiewicz, a US Army Veteran and who is typically one of the top brokers of industrial real estate in the southeast United States. Narkiewicz had just won the listing on a major new development and was looking for a unique way to maximize its exposure. "The landlords and brokers loved the event and they couldn't forget about my listings even if they tried. My client and I completed the first large lease coming out of the recession and achieved a new market high rent."
They use clever marketing messages to give exposure to the sponsors. One such message was thanking Blue Crew Services, a well known janitorial company, for removing over 800 pounds of spoiled pickled pigs' feet from one of the member's new listings. Narkiewicz stated "It really happened. The regeneration system failed and it was two months before the next time anyone visited the closed plant. The email spurred a series of emails."
The internet based fully automated pool has grown into a very popular state-wide industry event complete with multiple corporate sponsors. There is no cost to participate, they give away over $300 in prizes a week and all remaining proceeds are donated to charity at the end of the season. "The program is run by volunteers and no one receives any sort of compensation." This year the remaining balance will be donated to The National Pediatric Cancer Foundation and The Gold Shield Foundation which was started by George Steinbrenner. The charity provides financial aid to the children of fallen law enforcement.
Participants make their selections at www.spaceshifter.com and can check their standings in real time from any computer or mobile device. Narkiewicz states the cloud based system is extremely scalable and could become a nationwide event.
Space Shifter is a Digital Marketing Co-Op that also uses commercial real estate as a way to raise money for charity. 40 percent of the money collected is used to operate the software, 40 percent is used to drive traffic to the member's listings and the remaining 20 percent is donated to charity. Membership now exceeds 600 and the website out performs those of even the largest landlords and brokerage firms. "Their traffic is absolutely fantastic and members are getting legitimate leads enabling them to shift their vacancies faster. There was nearly 1,000 unique visitors over a 24 hour period." States Narkiewicz.
