Inter-Sect Conflict between Monks of Tibet results in Ancient Artifacts Defaced & Destroyed at Mt. Kailash, Tibet
NEW YORK, Sept. 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- In one of the holy sites of ancient Buddhism, the names and imagery of the respected Drukpa (or Dragon) Sect have fallen victim to religious oppression, defilement and violations of basic liberties in the Mount Kailash region of Tibet. The sacred Mount Kailash is located in the western part of Tibet called Ngari, known as "the roof of the world."
In a report on Heritage Preservation the Live to Love International Foundation (dated September 11, 2014 http://goo.gl/iGUeYO) names the Drukpa Lineage as being victim of systemic abuse and monastic take-over by the Karma Kagyu Lineage (one of the wealthiest sects of Tibetan Buddhism) forcing members of the 1,000 year-old Drukpa Lineage to convert under threat of exile from their spiritual homes.
Live to Love International, a non-profit specializing in heritage preservation, cited incidents of vandalism and destruction of ancient artifacts at the revered landmark, Tathapri Monastery – a Drukpa institution with its own history and canon. The report outlines how the Karma Kagyu representatives forcibly took the monastery by paying millions of RMB to select individuals, then forcing a widespread conversion of the Drukpa community to the Karma Kagyu sect. Relevant historical artifacts, relics and artwork specific to Drukpa have been destroyed, defaced and replaced with symbols of their violent takeover.
The report also cites violations beginning over 15 years ago when Dri-ra Phug Monastery, a critical Drukpa seat, was forcibly taken over by ranking monks of the Karma Kagyu Lineage. This purportedly occurred under the instruction of their spiritual head, His Holiness Karmapa Ugyen Thinley Dorje. Because His Holiness the Karmapa was a 10-year old child at the time, many believe that operators within his organization misappropriated his name and title. According to the report, the name "His Holiness the Karmapa" continues to be used to forcibly take over and convert Drukpa Lineage monasteries. Such incidences are being cataloged and tracked in an effort to prevent further destruction of Drukpa Lineage texts, art and artifacts.
Live to Love International and the local Drukpa community seek to have monasteries and sacred heritage & relics returned to their rightful stewardship. Both are hopeful that with the support of the local government, such civil violations will cease and the Karma Kagyu Lineage will make reparations.
