SOMERSET, N.J., May 4, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Thirty-six million Americans suffer from hearing loss, but only 20 percent seek help. During May – National Hearing Month – more than 28 million Americans with untreated hearing loss could be missing out on the sounds of spring, like birds singing and the wind rustling through the trees.
To ensure that you won't be among those missing out on the many sounds that color our world, Oticon, Inc. offers practical advice:
Take action if you suspect you're already missing everyday sounds. Schedule an appointment for a hearing check-up – and make an annual hearing check part of your family's health care routine.
If a hearing loss is detected, there are a wide range of small and discreet hearing solutions that will allow you to hear more clearly whether you're in a noisy restaurant or enjoying a quiet stroll in the park.
Whatever your level of hearing health, you can make sound choices throughout the day to protect the hearing you have.
Limit the amount of time you expose your ears to loud noise. Over time, sounds that are louder than 85 decibels, about the loudness of heavy traffic, can lead to noise induced hearing loss.
Stay as far away from the source of noise as possible and walk away when sounds get too loud.
Turn down the volume on TVs, radios, and portable music players.
Reduce the number of noisy appliances running at the same time.
Buy quieter products, especially children's toys and personal care appliances like blow dryers.
Use ear protection wherever possible. Invest in a set of inexpensive foam earplugs or visit a home or sporting goods store and purchase sound-reducing earmuffs.
