CHICAGO, March 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- We know that milk is good for our kids, providing protein, calcium and important vitamins and minerals. That's why it's always been a key component of the school lunch programs in the U.S. In developing countries, however, 60 million primary school-aged children attend class hungry.
But, there's good news. When school feeding programs are established in developing countries, learning improves, more boys and girls attend school and more children will complete all six years of primary school – all while improving their overall health and nutrition. Because milk contains virtually all the vital nutrients required for growth, it is central to school feeding programs. Milk and other dairy products are excellent sources of calcium, which is especially important for children and vital for the growth and strength of bones.
In honor of National Nutrition Month in March, Milk Unleashed and Tetra Pak salute one organization that is making great strides in these efforts, the Global Child Nutrition Foundation. GCNF provides training and assistance to support the development of community-based school feeding programs that respond to the nutritional needs of children, while considering local cultural and community values.
