WASHINGTON, June 18, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Terry O'Sullivan, General President of LIUNA – the Laborers' International Union of North America – made the following statement today regarding introduction of legislation by Sens. Murphy and Corker to address the failing Highway Trust Fund:
LIUNA applauds Sens. Murphy and Corker for their continued bi-partisan progress in the U.S. Senate to make our roads and bridges safer and strengthen our economy by addressing the failing Highway Trust Fund with a long-term, full-investment solution.
It's time to end the 'pothole penalty' – the lost lives, accidents and damage to vehicles caused by poor roads and deficient and obsolete bridges. Congress now has multiple, viable options to work with to address our crumbling transportation infrastructure and they should feel compelled to do so. It's time to stop sugar-coating this issue and to take action.
Failing to address the Highway Trust Fund crisis will make our transportation systems less safe and will deliver an unnecessary economic punch in the form of hundreds of thousands of lost jobs. For LIUNA, ensuring a long-term, full-investment solution is about creating and protecting jobs – but it's as much about making our roads and bridges safe. Like most working people, we rely on them every day.
See LIUNA's campaign to press for long term, full investment in our roads and bridges – including radio ads, billboards, online action and the "Getting Schooled in Infrastructure" school bus tour – at www.FixOurBridges.org.
