JCP&L Continues Tree Trimming Program to Help Enhance Service Reliability
MORRISTOWN, N.J., July 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- To help maintain proper clearances around electrical equipment and help prevent tree-related outages, Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) forestry contractors trimmed trees in more than 60 communities in July.
Under the guidance of JCP&L's foresters, tree contractors have trimmed about 2,000 miles of electric lines in northern and central New Jersey year-to-date, with an additional 1,500 miles expected to be completed by year end.
"Proper tree trimming is one of the most important things we can do to reduce the number of power outages our customers experience, especially when severe weather hits the area," said Anthony Hurley, JCP&L vice president of Operations. "In addition, since many outages involve trees located outside our usual trimming corridor, we also take the time to educate customers about the need to properly maintain trees located on private property and near our equipment so outages can be prevented."
In July, JCP&L contractors trimmed trees in the following counties and municipalities:
- Burlington County - Wrightstown
- Essex County – Livingston Township and Millburn Township
- Hunterdon County – Califon, Clinton Township, Glen Gardner, High Bridge, Lambertville, Lebanon, Readington Township, Tewksbury Township and West Amwell
- Mercer County – Washington Township
- Monmouth County – Belmar, Brielle, Colts Neck, Freehold, Freehold Township, Holmdel Township, Howell Township, Long Branch, Manasquan, Marlboro Township, Middletown Township, Red Bank, Shrewsbury Township, Tinton Falls, Wall Township and West Long Branch
- Morris County – Boonton, Boonton Township, Dover, East Hanover Township, Hanover Township, Kinnelon, Mendham, Mendham Township, Morris Plains, Morristown, Morris Township, Mount Arlington, Netcong, Randolph, Riverdale, Rockaway, Rockaway Township and Wharton
- Ocean County – Jackson Township

- Sussex County – Branchville, Byram Township, Fredon Township, Hampton Township, Hopatcong and Stillwater
- Union County – Summit

To help maintain safe and reliable electric service, JCP&L regularly trims or removes trees and conducts vegetation management work along its electric distribution lines on a four year cycle. The company's certified forestry experts inspect vegetation near the lines to ensure trees are pruned in a manner that helps maintain the health of the tree, while also maintaining safety near electric facilities. In some cases, trees that present a danger or are diseased may also be removed.
All vegetation management work is conducted by JCP&L's certified forestry contractors, including: Aspen Tree Service, Asplundh Tree Expert Company, Davey Tree, Jaflo Inc., Lewis Tree Service Inc., Nelson Tree Service and Treesmiths Utility Arborists.
As part of the process, JCP&L works with municipalities to inform them of vegetation management schedules. In addition, customers living in areas along company rights-of-way also are notified prior to work being done.
