Joe Sharkey, Renowned New York Times Travel Journalist, Joins travel.BUZZ
Following an impressive career spanning 16 years covering business travel for The New York Times, Sharkey joins travel.BUZZ as contributor-at-large
LAS VEGAS, April 7, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Travel.BUZZ announced today that seasoned journalist Joe Sharkey, the former New York Times "On the Road" columnist for 16 years with 830 consecutive weekly columns, has joined the innovative travel and entertainment start-up as contributor-at-large. This partnership marks an exclusive travel-site relationship between Joe Sharkey and travel.BUZZ.
"Joe Sharkey could have chosen to write for any publication in the world and we are honored he has chosen to write for us," said Howard Lefkowitz, founder and CEO. "That is a strong statement from a veteran newspaper columnist with such an esteemed body of work spanning over four decades. In addition to the New York Times, Sharkey has also been an editor and reporter with the Wall Street Journal and has authored five books, two of which are in development as movies. Joe has covered the universe of frequent travel, from the final flight of the supersonic luxury Concorde in Paris to the quotidian grind of literal road-warriors. He was one of seven people who survived a horrific mid-air collision at 37,000 feet above the Amazon in Brazil. By joining our progressive company, Joe – who began his journalism career in the 1970s as an entertainment columnist with the Philadelphia Inquirer – is sharing his valuable experience – and embracing the future of the travel industry. Our customers will have the chance to gain insights and commentary from an expert traveler rather than just anyone who may have stayed in a hotel."
Unlike other travel sites where consumers see just a snapshot of their destinations, travel.BUZZ is launching content-rich sites in the top 300 destinations around the world, including paris.buzz, london.BUZZ, vegas.BUZZ, madrid.BUZZ, miami.BUZZ and orlando.BUZZ to name a few. Each .BUZZ site provides travelers with a vast array of hotels, air, transportation, shows, tours, clubs, restaurants, and much more -- all bookable in one place. The sites also provide consumers with insider tips, expert opinions and valuable information, including Sharkey's weekly buzz, to assure those with wanderlust won't wander lost at home or on vacation.
Joe's weekly column will cover a wide range of global travel and entertainment topics, and will also address readers' questions on travel and will allow him to engage in ongoing conversation with people using the .BUZZ sites.
"I tell my students that journalists need to be more consumer facing and interactive. As business and personal travel are merging together and given the way people are living their lives today, I am thrilled to be working with a company that brings those worlds together," said Sharkey. "I'm looking forward to engaging with readers, and hearing their comments on travel and entertainment around the world. Travel and entertainment are intrinsically linked, and I'm excited to be able to write a column with a global perspective on both."
Sharkey is also a journalism professor at the University of Arizona in Tucson and a contributor to Business Jet Traveler magazine. He and his wife Nancy Sharkey live in Tucson with a horse and two parrots.
In an effort to keep intact Sharkey's 830 consecutive Tuesdays in publication, his first column posted on the .BUZZ websites, including travel.BUZZ, today, Tuesday, April 7. His last column in the New York Times ran on Tuesday, March 31.
