LOS ANGELES, April 4, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Recently, the Joomla! Community celebrated a new milestone by surpassing the 80-million download mark. This milestone represents a continued path of growth for the Content Management System (CMS) that has led the way in open-source community projects for more than 11 years.
80 million downloads represent countless individuals and organizations around the world who have experienced firsthand the opportunity to not only use a continually growing piece of Internet technology but to have the chance to get directly involved in the actual making and operation of the organization.
In those 11 years, there have also been more than 10 thousand extensions and templates written for the CMS. Distribution and finding all these enhancements to the core system is aided by a dedicated catalog of resources called the Joomla Extension Directory (JED) which allows developers to share their enhancements at no cost while allowing the Joomla! User community to find the latest resources and to rate these tools for their effectiveness. The JED is also unique because it is actively maintained by a volunteer team who helps to ensure that the items listed maintain proper licensing, are properly identified (for what version they are compatible with), and also work with the volunteer Joomla Vulnerability Extensions List team.
It is presently estimated that Joomla! powers over 2 million public websites, representing everything from small firms to some of the largest names on the Internet, like Michael Phelps, Holiday Inn, and the United Nations.
Joomla! is well known for its ability to be used in many cultures, due to its support of over 68 languages for the core CMS. It also boasts a multi-lingual system that allows site owners to translate their sites easily. Core translations and many other extension developers use the Transifex translation platform to permit easy contributions to expanding this international reach.
The Joomla! Community includes more than 800 volunteers who have contributed to the project. This vibrant community has built and maintained both the Joomla! CMS codebase and the entire structure and process of the Joomla! Community. There are presently no paid staff members within the Joomla! organization, which has just elected a new Board of Directors for its parent organization, Open Source Matters Inc., as well as departmental leadership members. This team of leaders oversees the functioning of the Joomla! Project – from coding to marketing to international events.
