Justice Appropriator Fattah Lauds Real Change, Not Small Change, in Healthcare Fraud Recovery
WASHINGTON, Dec. 19, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee and the top Democratic appropriator for the Department of Justice, issues this statement:
"The Obama Administration is not only reforming how healthcare is delivered to Americans. It is making dramatic strides to expose fraud in healthcare and Medicare payments and achieve financial recovery at record levels.
"The Justice Department under Attorney General Eric Holder's leadership just announced that it has recovered a three-year record of nearly $9 billion for fraudulent claims against the government. A huge amount of that recovery is for healthcare and Medicare fraud. Justice is going after the drug companies, phony equipment purveyors and all those who prey on the sick and the elderly while stealing from the government that insures them.
"Nine billion dollars is not small change. As one of General Holder's deputies said, the Administration has 'essentially raised healthcare fraud to a cabinet-level priority.' On the House Appropriations Committee we are committed to providing Justice and other federal departments involved in this critical recovery effort with the resources they need to fight for the taxpayers against the fraudsters."
