Kalorama: Billion-dollar Plus Market for Flow Cytometry Used in Clinical Testing
NEW YORK, Aug. 7, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The market for flow cytometry in IVD applications exceeded 1.1 billion dollars according to Kalorama Information. The healthcare market researcher says to expect just modest revenue growth from sales of these systems. The finding was made in Kalorama Information's recent report, The World Market for Flow Cytometry in IVD Applications.
The report can be found at http://www.marketresearch.com/redirect.asp?progid=86491&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Ekaloramainformation%2Ecom%2FFlow%2DCytometry%2DIVD%2D8234041%2F
Flow cytometers represent powerful IVD lab instruments that are now integral in advanced clinical labs in developed nations. Flow cytometry works by examining light scattered by the cells in fluid. They are advanced diagnostic instruments for cancer diagnostics, but their newer clinical applications included the commercialization and refinement of HIV testing and monitoring through CD4/CD8 counts. Until recently flow cytometry has been used exclusively for these purpose, though Kalorama Information says chemotherapy progress monitoring and transplantation testing are other applications are seeing procedure growth.
Despite this, Kalorama sees about 2% revenue growth for this area of IVD, a bit lower than the market overall. Overall, cytometry procedure volume will be stable – 62 million procedures in 2013 will grow to million in 2018.
"They are powerful instruments but a limiter to revenue growth this market is the cost of flow cytometry," said Bruce Carlson, Publisher of Kalorama Information. "Where cheaper technologies are available, they will be used."
A secondary limiter to growth when compared to other IVD procedures, according to the report, is threatened reimbursement cuts on advanced testing in developed countries, and the lack of infrastructure for replacement emerging markets growth. Two companies that dominate the market, Becton Dickinson and Beckman Coulter, are unlikely to be dethroned in the short term. The report says they tend to buy up promising competitors and constantly innovate systems to maintain market dominance.
Kalorama Information's report, The World Market for Flow Cytometry in IVD Applications, contains more information on the market for these systems, as well as the models involved and the companies who make them. The report breaks out revenue by region and by application segment.
