Kalorama: Hill-Rom Enters Monitoring Market with Welch Allyn Purchase
NEW YORK, July 7, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Hill-Rom's recent announcement that it would acquire Welch Allyn for $2 billion in cash and stock means the company can participate in the competitive patient monitoring market, according to Kalorama Information. The healthcare market researcher said that Hill-Rom has heretofore participated in the medical device and advanced wound care markets, and is known as a maker of hospital beds, patient lifting devices, and other healthcare equipment. Welch Allyn's product portfolio adds various viewing systems, monitoring devices, temperature sensing devices, and diagnostics. Welch Allyn's products include the third-generation Connex Monitor, announced in 2015, for the automatic movement of patient data to healthcare office EMRs. The system is designed for multi-parameter readings as well as wireless connectivity and future compatibility and integration with medical records. In 2013, Welch Allyn and EarlySense Ltd., a monitoring company headquartered in Israel, announced a joint agreement concerning the marketing and distribution of the EarlySense System, which Welch Allyn agreed to market the system in U.S. hospitals. The system is a continuous, non-contact patient monitoring solution that measures patient heart rate, respiration rate, movement, and according to Kalorama Information, of Welch Allyn's 539 patented technologies, there are 108 that contain the term "monitoring."
The companies expect the transaction to be completed before the end of September 2015.
Hill-Rom's purchase of Welch Allyn follows Hill-Rom's recent acquisition of Trumpf Medical. Hill-Rom completed its acquisition of Trumpf Medical in August of 2014. Adding Trumpf Medical to Hill-Rom's portfolio more than doubled the size of their surgical offering. Trumpf Medical has long been a market and innovation leader with a diverse line of integrated operating room solutions. Trumpf Medical's products and services include tables, modular equipment management systems, lighting and video solutions for the operating room, which complement Hill-Rom's Aspen Surgical and Allen Medical businesses.
