• Agilent Technologies is a leader in the market due to its sustained success in a variety of product areas. The firm has several different types of products that address key areas of the library preparation and target enrichment market, and its success in these areas has made it a leading company in the segment despite not being a supplier of sequencers. Agilent's SureSelect products for target enrichment are highly regarded by the end-users. The company's 2100 Bioanalyzer and associated electrophoresis chips are widely used for the sizing, quantitation and quality control of DNA and RNA prior to next-generation sequencing. Agilent has been primarily involved with target enrichment products and library quantitation, but it has been making deals and positioning itself to move downstream into sequencing itself. Specifically, Agilent has stated that its strategy is aimed at clinical sequencing.
• Thermo Fisher Scientific became a major player in the sequencer market through its acquisition in 2013 of Life Technologies, offering a large variety of hardware, consumables and other products for NGS sample preparation applications that provide great potential. Thermo/ Life Technologies has experienced respectable adoption of its Ion Torrent systems and has introduced new versions of its Ion Torrent sequencer, the S5 and S5 XL. Thermo has also made several recent deals that could boost its competitiveness in NGS. These include acquisitions such as Affymetrix, Alfa Aesar, and One Lambda, and collaborations including CompanionDx, GlaxoSmithKline, Invivoscribe, Lucigen, Novartis, Pfizer, and Premaitha.
