Along with the alpaca livestock competition, a fiber festival hosted by RAD Fibers will be held on both Saturday and Sunday, with felting and weaving classes and a fiber arts competition. Festival host RAD Fibers is a group of three Kentucky women - self-professed fiber junkies and alpaca breeders - who decided "fibering" together is much more fun than going it alone. They have pooled their resources and bring experience in spinning, felting, dyeing, carding ... just about anything fiber-related you can think of.
A member of the camelid family, alpacas are "green," environmentally friendly animals whose fiber is hypoallergenic, making it a fiber everyone can wear. Alpacas produce one of the world's finest and most luxurious fibers, which comes in 22 natural colors and is as soft as cashmere and warmer, lighter, and stronger than wool. Alpaca fiber, once worn only by ancient Incan royalty, is often referred to as "The Fiber of the Gods."
