LUTHERVILLE, Md., Jan. 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI) -- a nonprofit organization that facilitates cooperation between law enforcement, healthcare professionals, state regulatory agencies and pharmaceutical manufacturers in the prevention and investigation of drug diversion -- today applauded data showing the National Precursor Log Exchange (NPLEx) in Kentucky is blocking illegal sales of safe and effective medications containing pseudoephedrine (PSE).  Over the course of the last year, electronic technology in the Commonwealth blocked the sale of more than 32,000 boxes of PSE-containing medicines keeping more than 78,000 grams off the street.  In fact, there were more than 14,000 purchasers blocked at the counter.

"The facts in Kentucky show the real-time, stop-sale system is working and blocking illegal sales at the counter.  The evidence also makes a compelling case that the methamphetamine problem is pervasive in a limited area with 32 counties in Kentucky having zero meth lab incidents in 2011," said Charles F. Cichon, executive director of the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI).  "While there is still work to be done in the Commonwealth in the fight against criminals manufacturing and using meth, electronic technology is verifiably stopping illegal sales.  Going forward, enhancing the stop-sale system with a meth offender registry is a common sense approach that ensures criminals cannot access reliable and common cold and allergy medicines without punishing law-abiding workers and families."
