BRIDGEPORT, Conn., July 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Comeback America Initiative (CAI) and No Labels-Connecticut are co-hosting "Restoring Federal and State Fiscal Responsibility Forum" on July 15, 2011 at the Hartford Club in Hartford, CT from 11:00am ET - 2:00pm ET. This event comes at a critical time given the deteriorating financial condition of both the federal government and the State of Connecticut.
The event will feature guest speaker, Senator Joseph Lieberman, and two panels of key leaders. The federal fiscal panel will include Congresswoman Nancy Johnson, Congresswoman Barbara Kennelly and Linda McMahon. It will be moderated by Hon. David M. Walker, Founder of CAI and former U.S. Comptroller General. The state fiscal panel will include Governor Lowell Weicker, Secretary Ben Barnes, Oz Griebel and Sheila Weinberg. It will be moderated by Dr. Debra Hauser, Co-Leader of No Labels Connecticut. The panels will be a nonpartisan discussion of the facts and a bipartisan discussion of possible solutions. The event will provide a forum to facilitate conversations about how to help put both our federal and state governments on a more prudent and sustainable fiscal path.
At the federal level, discussions surrounding our nation's fiscal condition are currently focused on the debt ceiling. According to David Walker, "The federal government must increase the debt ceiling; however, it should couple any increase with specific steps to reduce spending, deficits and debt/GDP levels before we face a debt crisis in the U.S."
At the state level, the recent failure to ratify a new labor agreement has caused a last minute scramble to balance the budget. According to Debra Hauser, "Connecticut needs to not only address our short term budget challenges, but also begin to address the huge unfunded obligations and other factors that threaten the state's fiscal future."
There is limited space available for this event and RSVPs are required. Given significant interest in the event, it will be recorded, and within a few days of the event, CAI will post the recording on its website, where the public will be able to comment and express their views. If you would like to attend the event please email [email protected].
