LOS ANGELES, Jan. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The L.A. Women's roller derby has enjoyed tremendous success since it was revived in Texas in 2001. Eschewing the campy, scripted entertainment of lore, roller derby has evolved into a highly respected sport focusing on athleticism and entrepreneurship with 1,500 leagues worldwide. LADD has been at the forefront of the revolution, representing the sport to mainstream media since it was founded by Rebecca Ninburg and Wendy Templeton in 2003.
"When Wendy and I started the Derby Dolls, we never imagined that we would be part of a global community that now numbers in the tens of thousands, with a league in every major city in the country," said Rebecca Ninburg , president, L.A. Derby Dolls. "We're proud to celebrate the roller derby community, the spirit and athleticism, and inspire women to achieve more in their lives."
LADD sell out to nearly 2,000 fans monthly in its dedicated venue in Historic Filipinotown (1910 W. Temple). The league proudly counts such prominent brands as Stila Cosmetics, Jack Daniel 's, Pabst Blue Ribbon and S-One Helmet Company as partners.
The milestone 2013 season recently commenced, with an upcoming event on Saturday, February 9, featuring LADD's all-star team versus Arizona Derby Dames. Tickets can be found at http://derbydolls.com/tickets/
ABOUT THE L.A. DERBY DOLLS
Founded in 2003, the L.A. Derby Dolls (http://derbydolls.com/la) are Southern California's premiere women's banked-track, quad-skating, roller derby league. Within the league, four fierce teams battle for dominance: Fight Crew, Sirens, Tough Cookies and Varsity Brawlers. The L.A. Ri-Ettes are L.A. Derby Doll 's all-star team that competes on a national level against the best of the best in the country. While their uniforms may be stylish and their names playful, do not be fooled by appearances – the L.A. Derby Dolls are athletes who skate a sport that is unscripted and real. Honored as a Treasure of Los Angeles by the Central City Association, the L.A. Derby Dolls embody the do-it-yourself ethos of modern women's roller derby.
The L.A. Derby Dolls are one of only thirteen leagues in the U.S. playing roller derby on a banked track. Like most modern female roller derby leagues, the Derby Dolls are volunteer-run and give back to the community that has embraced them. The league also operates the Junior Derby Dolls (http://derbydolls.com/juniorderby/) for girls ages 8-17.
