LAC Federal Wins Contract With Smithsonian Libraries for Cataloging Services

ROCKVILLE, Md., Nov. 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- LAC Federal, a provider of mission-critical outsourced library, information, and knowledge management services for the U.S. government, has won a five-year contract to supply the Smithsonian Libraries with cataloging and cataloging support services.

LAC Federal's team will provide original and copy cataloging of books, CDs, microfilm, electronic journals, magazines and other printed material in a variety of western European and Asian languages. Some cataloging assignments may include maps, notated music, manuscripts, sound recordings, and video recordings. The cataloging support services provided by LAC Federal will include maintaining or enhancing bibliographic records in the libraries' online system, creating item and holdings records and providing additional physical processing to enable proper shelving and retrieval of the items.

The Smithsonian Libraries acquire new material through a variety of channels including gifts-in-kind of books and other research material from generous donors including renowned researchers and scientists. The LAC Federal team supports the efforts of the libraries' staff to ensure the discoverability of and access to the unique and valuable research collections by creating detailed cataloging records in accordance with internationally recognized standards.

LAC Federal provides library and information center services for numerous agencies of the United States including the Commerce Research Library of the Department of Commerce, Foreign Service Institute's Stephen Low Information Center, The Joint Bank-Fund Library, Library of Congress, National Agricultural Library, National Library of Education, NOAA Central Library and Regional Libraries, and USAID Library and Knowledge Services Center. These services range from supporting specific functions to managing and staffing the whole institution.
