Leahy established the scholarship because he knows firsthand both the sacrifices that are made not just by those serving in the Marines, but by their families as well. Considering the constantly rising cost of tuition and books, the Open Tax Resolution Law Student scholarship has been started as a way to support those whose families have served our country, while giving a promising young student the chance to finish law school.
"My brother's service inspired me," Leahy said of the scholarship. "And I noticed others have set up ways to give back to both service members and their families, such as military.com, supportourtroops.org, and thankaservicemember.org. I wanted to do my part as well."
The scholarship is open to any law student 18 years of age or older who is currently attending (or accepted and planning to attend) an accredited law school and is or has had a family member in the Marine Corps. Applicants must have a cumulative minimum GPA of 3.0 from undergraduate or current law schoolwork. Applicants must also submit a 1-3 page essay that describes the impact of that service and the sacrifices their family has made. The deadline for submitting the application, essay, and supporting documentation (such as an official copy of undergraduate and/or law school transcripts with GPA) is June 30th, 2015.
The application materials are available at the law firm's website at http://chicagotaxteam.com/marine-service-law-school-scholarship. The winning applicant with receive a check made out to their law school in the amount of $1,000 for use towards tuition or books, and will be expected to submit receipts in accordance with IRS regulations.
