Leading Addiction Treatment Center Calls For 'Palcohol' Ban By California State Legislature

Los Angeles-Based The Discovery House Says Safety Concerns For Youth Trump Convenience Factor

LOS ANGELES, April 22, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Discovery House, a leading alcohol and drug addiction treatment center in Los Angeles, has called upon the California State Legislature to preemptively ban sales of powdered alcohol products in advance of their anticipated marketing distribution this summer.

Known as Palcohol, the product already has prompted regulatory action in six states (Alaska, Louisiana, South Carolina, Utah, and Vermont). Earlier this year, the product passed federal regulatory agency reviews and is scheduled for a nationwide launch into the consumer marketplace this summer.

"The safety of our children and adults who are at risk for addiction are too important to be jeopardized by a product with little redeeming value," said The Discovery House Founder, Tom Whiting,  "The likelihood of widespread Palcohol abuse — particularly among underage consumers — carries a real possibility of tragic consequences.

"With this in mind, we are calling upon the California Legislature to immediately initiate legislation to prohibit the sale of powdered alcohol throughout the state," said Whiting.

The product has been promoted for its practical advantages of a lightweight drink for hikers. (The patented powdered form of alcohol is mixed with water, negating the need to carry bottles of adult beverages.)

However, Whiting dismissed the supposed convenience of the product as minimal at best and potentially dangerous at worse. "Palcohol poses the danger of mixing multiple packets of the powder into a single drink. It's also much easier to conceal than bottled beverages.

"This is an accident waiting to happen. Let's be smart and avoid future regrets by casting a vote now for the safety of our citizens," said  Whiting.

The Discovery House is a full service drug addiction treatment center that helps individuals who are struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. Our Los Angeles rehab center is located in sunny Southern California, near Ventura, Thousand Oaks, Woodland Hills, the San Fernando Valley, and Santa Monica.
