PHILADELPHIA, April 20, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Legal-Bay LLC, The Lawsuit Settlement Funding Company which operates lawsuitssettlementfunding.com, reported today that former NYPD cop, Peter Liang, will receive no jail time over the fatal shooting of Akai Gurley.
Akai Gurley, who was unarmed, was accidentally shot and killed by former NYPD cop Peter Liang when Liang's gun went off in a dimly lit stairwell of a Brooklyn housing project.
Liang was convicted of manslaughter in the killing, but the charge was reduced to criminally negligent homicide at the sentencing.
Gurley's family had called for prison time for the cop, according to The NY Daily News. However, Liang was sentenced to five years' probation and 800 hours of community service.
According to the article, "scores of angry protesters" outside the courthouse were chanting about the "system." Meanwhile, there were also "about 100" "cop supporters" yelling about justice for Liang.
Chris Janish, CEO of Legal-Bay, commented on the recent news, "It is clear that this case has sparked controversy among the public, but above all else we hope that the victim's family finds peace. We want to remind victims of police brutality, misconduct, or wrongful imprisonment that we are here to help them, or their loved ones, with getting their lives back on track if they need assistance."
