Legislators Gain Insight at Insurance Education Seminar
Griffith Insurance Education Foundation Hosts Louisiana Legislators
COLUMBUS, Ohio, Feb. 17, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Over 90% of both Louisiana State House & Senate Insurance Committee members attended a Griffith Insurance Education Foundation seminar mid-February in Baton Rouge intended to provide a non-partisan overview of important insurance and risk management concepts.
"This was a real Insurance 101 kind of event," said event cosponsor and House Insurance Committee Chairman, Gregory Cromer. "This type of seminar is offered by the Griffith Foundation at different venues throughout the country, and we were fortunate that the Louisiana legislators had an opportunity to participate." Cromer's counterpart, Dan "Blade" Morrish, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Insurance added, "The topic of insurance can prove complex. Having the expertise of Griffith and the university-level faculty presenters will enhance our understanding of future bills that come before committee—particularly because material was presented in an unbiased manner."
Principal presenters included:
- William L. Ferguson, Ph.D., CLU, CPCU, ARM; Associate Professor of Finance, Insurance and Risk Management at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette
- Christine Berry, Ph.D., CPCU, ARM, ARe; Associate Professor of Risk Management and Insurance at University of Louisiana at Monroe
Louisiana Insurance Commissioner, James J. Donelon, who provided keynote remarks at the seminar luncheon, noted that the 30 public policymakers in attendance were exposed to an impressive breadth of material. "We reviewed not only the general business of insurance, but covered the impact of risk management on public policy, the regulation of insurance, various property and liability risks, the tort system and insurance products such as life insurance, annuities, employee benefits and ERISA, health insurance and long-term care insurance. It was truly an education-packed day."
The Griffith Foundation relies on charitable contributions for support of its mission to engage public policymakers and improve understanding of key insurance and risk management information and trends. "We understand that the very health of the insurance marketplace depends on having legislators nationwide truly grasp the impact of the laws and regulations they consider," explains Melissa Wheeler, Griffith's Director for Public Policymaker Education. "The positive impact for insurance markets is substantial."
