LG Electronics and DoSomething.org Recognize Youth for Energy-Saving Efforts on ENERGY STAR® Day 2012
Winners of '2012 Team ENERGY STAR® Challenge' Awarded Total of 40 Prizes from LG Electronics
WASHINGTON, Oct. 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- LG Electronics USA and DoSomething.org today announced the 25 youth winners of the "2012 Team ENERGY STAR Challenge." The organizations are using EPA's first ENERGY STAR Day, Oct. 10 (celebrating ENERGY STAR's 20th anniversary), to recognize the efforts of today's youth in saving energy and protecting the climate.
Team ENERGY STAR is an initiative from EPA's ENERGY STAR program that uses Dr. Seuss' "The Lorax" to engage and educate millions of American youth and their families about saving energy in the home. More than 10,000 young people participated in the effort to learn how to help their families save energy at home.
LG Electronics USA and DoSomething.org, one of the largest U.S. organizations for teens and social change, joined EPA in this effort by running their own Team ENERGY STAR Challenge — an opportunity for youth to share their energy-saving stories and an opportunity to win cool LG prizes.
"Team ENERGY STAR is an innovative initiative that prompts youth to think about their everyday actions and how small changes can make a big difference when it comes to saving energy," said James Fishler, senior vice president of marketing for LG Electronics USA. "Through the Team ENERGY STAR Challenge, LG is proud to recognize and reward kids that are doing amazing things to help save the planet."
"As the ENERGY STAR program enters its third decade, we're excited that a new generation of Americans is committing to combat climate change through energy efficiency," said Sarah Dunham, director of EPA's Office of Atmospheric Programs. "EPA thanks DoSomething.org and LG Electronics for helping us celebrate ENERGY STAR Day by recognizing young people who are making a difference."
"DoSomething.Org has been proud to partner with the EPA on the Team ENERGY STAR Challenge and to work with a terrific brand like LG on this campaign. We've seen over the years that young people are passionate about the environment and saving energy - they never cease to amaze me with their creative solutions to a global problem," said April Wright, campaigns manager for DoSomething.org.
The Team ENERGY STAR Challenge ran from June through September 2012, with nearly 500 youth sharing their energy-saving stories. Entries were judged by EPA and DoSomething.org based on their energy-saving ideas, as well as creativity and ingenuity.
Top winners of the Team ENERGY STAR Challenge are being awarded a suite of prizes from LG Electronics, including an ENERGY STAR-certified LED/LCD flat-screen HDTV; an ENERGY STAR-certified LED Monitor; the world's first computer mouse with an embedded scanner function; and an LG Connect 4G smart phone. The top winners include:
- Alexandra Smith, Orlando, Fla.
- Bryce Pate, Palm Harbor, Fla.
- Caleigh Gabriel, Fargo, N.D.
- Imelia Grace, Knoxville, Tenn.
In addition to the top prize winners, 20 other winners are each receiving one LG prize — an ENERGY STAR-certified LED/LCD TV, an ENERGY STAR-certified LED Monitor, a mouse scanner or a LG Connect 4G smart phone.
Top Team ENERGY STAR Challenge winners are also being featured on the LG Electronics' electronic billboard in New York's Times Square as part of the two-week ENERGY STAR 20th Anniversary celebration, which runs from ENERGY STAR Day on Oct. 10 through the Oct. 24 wrap-up of the annual ENERGY STAR Partners Meeting.
Team ENERGY STAR is part of the multi-year, EPA campaign, "Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR," developed to engage Americans of all ages in saving energy, money and protecting the environment with ENERGY STAR. If every American household took part in the Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR Pledge, the nation would save more than 126 billion kilowatt-hours per year of electricity, save $18 billion in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions from 20 million cars.
About ENERGY STAR

We love teens. They are creative, active, wired…and frustrated that our world is so messed up. DoSomething.org harnesses that awesome energy and unleashes it on causes teens care about. Almost every week, we launch a new national campaign. The call to action is always something that has a real impact and doesn't require money, an adult, or a car.
