MCLEANSVILLE, N.C., Aug. 27, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Litera today announced its own variation on the widely popular "ALS Ice-Bucket Challenge" to raise awareness and donations for those suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In addition to dropping an entire tractor load of ice water on Litera CEO Deepak Massand and President Paul Domnick (see the YouTube clip here), Litera has pledged a one thousand dollar donation and a subsequent one hundred dollar donation for each of its over 900 client organizations who complete the challenge within the next 24 hours.
"Social consciousness is a big part of the Litera culture," said Paul Domnick, President of Litera. "In addition to our regular donations to Second Harvest, the Save Darfur Coalition, SOS Children's Villages, and Southern Poverty Law Center, we are excited about this great opportunity to raise awareness for ALS and invite every one of our clients to take the challenge."
Currently, there is only one drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat ALS, which only modestly extends survival by two to three months. Consequently, ALS is 100 percent fatal. In addition to acclimating to the challenges that come with losing control of voluntary muscle movement, people with the disease progressively lose their ability to eat, speak, walk, and eventually breathe.
"Some of the recent research in ALS is mind-blowing," said Karen Massand, Director of Litera. "For years our AxxiTRIALS team has been providing secure document exchange tools for clinical research organizations, lifescience companies and study sites, with the single goal of massively speeding up trial operations. We are passionate about research and the inspiring ALS ice-bucket challenge. We hope to spread the enthusiasm further with our team spirit and donations for client participation."
