Long-Sharp Gallery + Modern and Contemporary Masters at Art Miami 2018
INDIANAPOLIS, Nov. 28, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- For its fourth year at Art Miami (December 4 – 9), Miami's premier anchor fair, Long-Sharp Gallery combines old and new -- masterworks will be displayed alongside paintings and sculptures by contemporary artists, many of whom are recognizable for patrons of recent Florida museum exhibitions.
In addition to original works by Antonio Tàpies (2015 solo exhibition, Pérez Art Museum, Miami) and fellow Spanish artists Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso, viewers will also find sculpture by Gino Miles (2017-18 solo exhibition, the Polk Museum of Art, Lakeland), mixed media paintings by Jason Myers (2017 solo exhibition, the Polk Museum, Lakeland), and paintings by British artist David Spiller (2018 Cornell Museum, Delray Beach). Smaller sculptures by New York and India-based artist Tarik Currimbhoy and wall sculpture by Cha Jong Rye of South Korea will also be on view.
The booth encourages visitors to view storied painters next to a stable of exciting contemporary artists—and their work speaks to patience, presence, and painterly beauty, all of which are, today, welcome and necessary respites. "Many of these pieces can be appreciated by sitting with them, taking time with them," says gallery founder Rhonda Long-Sharp. "We selected works that are uplifting, peaceful and beautiful; works that sing love, beauty, hope, comfort."
Significantly, the contemporary work is made with the hands of each artist and "not by artists with studios of 40 [assistants]," adds Long-Sharp. "We select working artists whose minds and hands join in bringing each piece to life." Gino Miles shapes stainless steel into large, sweeping sculptures that move. Tarik Currimbhoy, who is also an architect, utilizes his architectural background to sculpt pieces that gently shift, swing, and play with the light. Cha Jong Rye's wood sculptures are still, but they seem to undulate, each piece—painstakingly crafted by hand, one-by-one—forming shapes that abstractly recall waves, crumpled sheets, spinning tops.
The colorful mixed media paintings of Jason Myers, an artist native to Indiana, are often created with resin and paint, providing depth and intrigue into his layered works. David Spiller, who passed away this summer, is paid homage at the Long-Sharp booth with his bright, joyous paintings that playfully reference popular catchphrases, poetry, and cartoon characters. As Long-Sharp describes it: "He's more relevant today than he's ever been." With paintings that read, "Hold my hand, I'll dry your tears," or simply "Hold me," Spiller's messages are both touching and telling.
