The facts speak for themselves. Skin cancer rates have shot up over the past three decades, and it is now the second most common cancer in people aged between 15 and 24 - exactly the sort of people who love a great value beach break.
The Teenage Cancer Trust's campaign, Shunburn, is fronted by the actors Nicholas Hoult and Michelle Ryan, and it reveals some terrifying statistics about our attitudes to skincare in the sun.
A whopping 60 percent of young people don't always apply sun cream when on the beach. One in ten believe that covering up on the beach is not cool, and 44 percent of young people lie in the sun for hours on end.
Cheap clubbing holidays 2012 might be the best way to avoid dreary weather and Olympic chaos in the UK, but lots of young people care more about how they look to their peers than having a great time while they're abroad. For example, 12 percent of 16-24 year olds believe that a tan is proof that you have been on holiday to a nice place.
40 percent think that people look healthier with a tan. This is one of the most difficult attitudes to shift when it comes to tanning - lying in the sun is incredibly dangerous, but it appears as if it's a healthy thing to do.
Not everyone sets out with poor intentions. Some young people simply forget to apply sun cream when they're outside.
