Lowe's Raises More Than $7.6 Million for MDA's Shamrocks Against Dystrophy

TUCSON, Ariz., April 5, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Lowe's stores and their customers came together for an important cause, raising more than $7.6 million in Shamrocks Against Dystrophy donations nationwide this spring. Lowe's set a record for retailers supporting the Shamrocks campaign, surpassing its own 2011 record total.

The funds will help individuals and families affected by muscular dystrophy and related diseases.

"We want to thank our caring customers for their overwhelming support and our entire Lowe's team for working together to help those with muscle diseases,'' said Joan Higginbotham, Lowe's Director of Community Relations. "Lowe's takes great pride in improving our communities and teaming with customers to positively impact the lives of children and adults nationwide.''

The popular fundraiser helps to support MDA's worldwide research program and national network of some 200 clinics.

Shamrock sales at Lowe's stores, distribution centers and offices also help send thousands of children with neuromuscular diseases to barrier-free MDA summer camp at the more than 75 camps throughout the United States.

"MDA is honored to have the support of Lowe's, and its generous customers across the country, in the fight to find treatments and cures for neuromuscular diseases,'' said MDA Interim President and Medical Director Valerie Cwik, M.D.  "Once again, Lowe's employees and their customers have come through for MDA in a big way."

In 2011, Lowe's raised nearly $6 million through the Shamrocks Against Dystrophy campaign – a record-breaking amount from any retailer since the program started in 1985.

Lowe's and its customers have raised nearly $30 million for MDA since 2001. In addition to their fundraising efforts, Lowe's employees volunteer at MDA summer camps, Muscle Walks and other events throughout the year.
