Macromolecular, Inc., Selected to Participate in U.S. Department of Defense $317 Million Fund to Develop "Revolutionary Fibers and Textiles."
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 5, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Macromolecular Inc. has been chosen to participate in the Revolutionary Fibers and Textiles Manufacturing Innovation Institute (RFT-MII), a $317 million public-private sector partnership with the Department of Defense dedicated to ensure that the U.S. stays at the leading edge of fiber science and the production of modern-day fabrics and fibers with extraordinary properties ("Smart Textiles").
Some of RFT-MII contemplated Smart Textiles include uses as protective gear for firefighters impervious to the hottest flames, fabrics used in military applications (i.e., tents, backpacks, uniforms, blankets, etc.) that can convert sunlight into electricity without compromise to the primary functionality of such application, fibers replicating the sensing capabilities of a smart watch, or detecting when a wounded soldier needs to be treated with an antimicrobial compression bandage.
The RFT-MII is the eighth manufacturing institute to be awarded by the Obama Administration, building on the President's vision to create a National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI) of at least 15 hubs across the country during his Administration. Collectively, the Federal government's commitment of nearly $600 million to the eight awarded institutes has been matched by over $1.2 billion in non-Federal investment from across industry, academia, and state governments.
About Macromolecular: Macromolecular Inc. is a Silicon Valley specialty polymer design and chemical engineering company that creates unique and "really cool" polymers. One such creation is our patent pending polymer formula. This is a uniquely adaptive polymer that can be used in various forms: a rigid or flexible plastic, a fiber or even a varnish. This polymer is the only flexible plastic in the world that is essentially (93%) transparent to ultra violet light. As such, this polymer is unmatched in its invulnerability to UV radiation degradation and offers unique applications in photovoltaics, active wear and swimwear textiles.
